Best Ubuntu Software on Ubuntu 24.04

#1. CrossOver

CrossOver is one of the most underrated apps available for Linux. This app made by a company called Codeweavers allows allows you easily run Windows Software & Windows Games on your Linux. You might be thinking well we already have Wine or PlayOnLinux available, what makes CrossOver any different? For one, CrossOver can run more Windows software than both of those combined and it doesn’t require you to have a valid Windows license to run the software. It is only 150mb in size and you can run Windows software without rebooting and the app runs directly on your Linux OS meaning your apps like Microsoft Office, Photoshop, games like Fifa 25 etc can instantly run on your Linux OS with CrossOver. We also have screenshots of CrossOver for you to checkout.

#2. Steam Client & Steam Play

Steam Play on Ubuntu

Steam is a must have client for anyone who is serious about gaming these days, especially with the introduction of Steam Play, which basically allows you to play games that were once labeled as Windows-only on your Ubuntu OS with a click of a button. I use Steam when I am gaming on my Linux and Window laptops and it works fine on both of them. Tons of developers use Steam as their official partner to market their games so it is something that is not going away anytime soon. Again, if you are serious about gaming on Ubuntu, you must try Steam or Steam Play, period.

#3. Google Chrome

Google Chrome on Ubuntu

Google Chrome is the world’s most popular web browser and it is my personal favorite as well. After installing Ubuntu or any other Linux OS, Chrome has to be one of the first apps you download right away. I am not hating on FireFox but the truth is in the coding, Google Chrome for whatever reason, gets the job done. Although lately some have complained about Chrome using too much memory, it still reigns supreme because of it’s speed and safety. Other’s also might tell you to try Chromium, which is basically the open source version of Chrome but the real thing is just fine and it is supported by Google themselves. [ Learn More ]

#4. uTorrent

uTorrent on Ubuntu

uTorrent for Linux is underrated for reasons I will probably never understand. I use uTorrent on both my Windows laptop and of course on my Linux OS and it works just fine on both. A lot of people prefer qTorrent on Ubuntu which is good but to be honest, uTorrent does what 95% of you will want it to do. It allows you to upload and download torrents with a click of a button without having worry about viruses or weird ways to update it etc, it simply just works. If you need to download movies and music on your Ubuntu, try uTorrent first and see if you like it. We also have screenshots for uTorrent for you to check out.

#5. VLC Media Player

VLC Media Player on Ubuntu

VLC Media Player is another must have app once your Ubuntu OS is setup. How else are you going to watch all your movies or videos? You need it and it works just fine. VLC Media player is the most popular media player on Windows OS and Linux OS for a reason. It gets the job done by playing almost all and any of your media files. It comes with the latest video codecs so you don’t have to worry if a certain format will work or not, just install it, get all the updates that are necessary and go ahead and enjoy your videos or even music.

#6. Audacity

Audacity on Ubuntu

Audacity is a pretty popular free multi-track audio editor and recorder for Linux and other operating systems. The interface is translated into many languages and you can use it record live audio, convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs, edit plenty of audio formats including WAT, MP3, FLAC etc, you can even mix sounds, change pitch on a recording many other tools and effects. I am surprised such an app hasn’t been bought out yet actually, with so many podcasts and music being released these days, this is a handy app to have on your Ubuntu.

#7. Spotify

Spotify on Ubuntu

Spotify is an multi-platform app that gives you access to tons of music, custom playlists, and plenty of podcasts to browse. I will admit, I don’t use it as much as I probably should and that is because YouTube does the job for me when it comes to music, it just does, especially since I also love Music videos, but that’s a story for another day. Spotify is too popular and too robust to not include it on this Ubuntu version list.

#8. Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is our official video conferencing software that we use almost all the time. It works great and I am really happy Microsoft is starting to take Linux seriously and offering native apps like this one. It works smoothly and it looks great too. I think this is a software every school, company, or organization should try if you want to communicate with your fellow employees remotely.

#9. Zoom

Zoom on Ubuntu

Zoom has become and instant success story with the Coronavirus scare and despite some hackers trying to ruin this great software, the company continues to update with better security and a native Linux app that works just as good as the Windows version if not better. We here at Oxavi Group are also use this software from time to time to communicate with our other employees overseas.

#10. Blender

Blender on Ubuntu

Blender is one of the most stable and popular software for video editing, animation, game developing, modding, VFX and 3D printing on any operating system. It could have ranked a bit hire but I think this is a suitable placement on the list. If you need a trusted software, just try Blender and you will love it. I have been using Blender even on my Windows laptop for at least 7-8 years now without any issue. The people behind Blender haven’t forgotten about us Linux people so they make sure to always update their native Linux version as well. [ Learn More ]

Blue Recorder on Ubuntu

Blue Recorder is desktop recorder for Linux systems. Built using Rust, GTK+ 3 and ffmpeg. It supports recording audio and video on Ubuntu. Some currently supported formats include: mkv, avi, mp4, wmv, gif and nut. This is a little underrated app but I felt that a lot of us look for simple screen recorders for Ubuntu and this one does the job on top of all this.
